The Job

A Staff Engineer in Developer Tooling at Tango requires passion for our people, customers, business, and technology. You will help deliver world-class rewards and service to our customers through support of our internal development teams.

As a Staff engineer, you will work closely with other Staff engineers to create and provide feedback on architectural designs, lead technical initiatives, provide consultation, and assist developer teams across engineering. You will spend time researching and prototyping new technologies with a focus on “value add”. You will be implementing code, leading, mentoring, and advocating for best practices. You will create architectural diagrams of existing and potential future systems. You will actively mentor and assist with growing the technical skills of our engineers.

Reports To: Director, Engineering

As a Staff SDE in Developer Tooling at Tango, you will:

  • Design and provide technical leadership of major initiatives
  • Contribute to the definition and modeling of Tango Card's architecture and the strategy to achieve business goals
  • Evaluate and select libraries, tools, and vendors from the market (in collaboration with other stakeholders) to meet the needs of the department and business
  • Lead initiatives cross-team and have broad impact on large technical projects; as a technical leader you will be instrumental in ensuring active communication and collaboration is taking place
  • Integrate with internal and external services, tools, and vendors to provide functionality reliably and securely
  • Implement solutions to provide best-in-class functionality to internal and external customers
  • Deliver secure, performant, scalable, resilient, observable, cloud-based systems to stakeholders in an iterative methodology
  • Measure and monitor new functionality for continuous feedback and improvement on performance
  • Mentor team members with a focus on expanding their technical breadth and depths
  • Be an innovation advocate within engineering
  • Foster a technical community culture, in and outside of Engineering, of transparency, rapport, and support

To be effective in our Staff SDE in Developer Tooling role, you must have the following technical experience:

  • Experience in Service Oriented Architecture and Structured Event-Driven Architecture
  • Strong knowledge of Design Patterns and SOLID Principles
  • Expertise in Object Oriented and Aspect Oriented Development
  • Expertise in Java 11 or higher, SpringBoot 2.1 or higher
  • Expertise in RDBMS, SQL, and data design (specifically PostgreSQL)
  • Experience with Cloud Platform Serverless technologies (specifically AWS)

Our Staff SDE in Developer Tooling will also have the following professional experience:

  • BA/BS degree in Computer Science or related fields and 8+ years of experience OR 10+ years equivalent experience in software development
  • Java based programming experience
  • Experience with production-worthy distributed systems development
  • Ability to distill information into concise, complete, and accurate requirements
  • Determining and applying design patterns to problem spaces
  • Ability to make autonomous decisions with incomplete information balancing risk, mitigation, and finality.
  • Experience in technical engineering practices for reviewing, testing, deployment, and release of internal and customer-facing functionality
  • Experience in building, maintaining, optimizing, and upgrading functionality in an iterative, secure, and resilient manner
  • Able to engage and contribute during any aspect of the life-cycle of a project or function.
  • Able to mentor and advise on quality software practices and designs within the team
  • Able to provide and receive feedback and guidance in a constructive manner and manage conflicting perspectives
  • Strong time management skills in projecting and meeting timelines, and determining when to escalate or discontinue

Our ideal Staff SDE in Developer Tooling will have most of the following experience:

  • Knowledge of Terraform or similar
  • 10+ years experience in web-based architecture
  • 7+ years experience working in an Agile environment
  • Experience with backstage.io or similar developer platforms

Salary: The targeted pay range for this position is between $163,000 to $204,000. Please note that the actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, and experience. Certain positions are eligible for additional forms of compensation such as bonus.
